55yo M’sian Man Spends Entire RM800k EPF On Friends & Home Reno, Now Forced To Work Again

Retirement money can disappear faster than you think.
A Malaysian man’s retirement plans took a drastic turn after he allegedly spent his entire RM800,000 EPF savings within a few years.

The story was shared anonymously on X through user @meinmokhtar, where the son opened up about how his father’s financial decisions left the family struggling.

Retired at 55 with RM800k in EPF

According to the son, his father retired from the private sector at the age of 55 and withdrew about RM800,000 from his EPF.

At first, things seemed manageable.

Part of the money went into renovating their home, which the son said was understandable. However, the remaining funds were spent on things that later proved to be costly mistakes.

His father reportedly invested with friends who turned out to be scammers.

On top of that, he lent money to several friends after they found out he had received his EPF payout. Many allegedly took advantage of the situation.

Debts left unsettled, house repossessed

The son also revealed that his father had existing debts that were not properly settled beforehand.

As the money ran out, the consequences became severe.

Their home was eventually repossessed by the bank. His mother is a housewife, and the family had to use up their own savings to cover his father’s financial missteps.

Now in his 60s, his father is attempting to return to work.

However, reentering the workforce has not been easy.

The son shared that employers are often reluctant to hire older workers, even though his father has experience and talent as a salesman.

Driving for e-hailing is also not an option as his father struggles with night vision and is not confident using navigation apps like Waze.

Meanwhile, the family still has two younger siblings who are studying.

All of this happened because of poor financial decisions,” the son admitted.

“Don’t get too comfortable”

In his final message, the son urged others not to feel overly secure after receiving a large sum of money.

In today’s high cost of living, if you mismanage your money like my dad did, even RM800,000 from EPF can be gone in just a few years,” he warned.

He added that quitting work entirely and relying solely on savings can cause funds to drain quickly.

Many said the confession was a sobering reminder that even large savings may not last without careful planning.
