A school bus ferrying 23 primary school students was involved in a collision with a cement lorry along the North-South Expressway near the Dato Onn exit in Johor Bahru this afternoon, resulting in injuries to four individuals, including the bus driver and three students.
The accident occurred at approximately 1.10pm on July 7.
Driver trapped, students injured
According to China Press, Tebrau Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohamad Shazil issued a statement reporting that the crash left four people injured: the 45-year-old female driver, who was pinned in the driver’s seat, and three students — one boy and two girls.
The remaining 19 students were unharmed and have been safely handed over to their families,” he said.
“The 32-year-old cement lorry driver was not injured.”
Rescue and medical response
Firefighters from both Tebrau and Kempas stations, totalling 10 personnel, were dispatched to the scene to assist in extricating the victims.
The injured individuals were later transported to Hospital Sultanah Aminah (Johor Bahru) for treatment. The driver was believed to have sustained more serious injuries due to being trapped, while the three students suffered minor injuries.
In a follow-up response to local media, Mohamad Shazil said the students on board comprised 8 boys and 14 girls, all of varying ages. However, their exact ages were not recorded during the rescue effort.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Initial reports suggest the school bus was travelling normally when it collided with the cement lorry under unclear circumstances.
No fatalities have been reported, but the incident has raised renewed concerns about road safety, particularly for vehicles transporting children.
