For many couples, age differences can sometimes become a topic of discussion. But for one Malaysian couple, love and sincerity mattered far more than the numbers.
A 28-year-old man has been happily married to a woman who is 23 years older than him since 2019, proving that age was never a barrier to their relationship.
Met on Facebook & married 3 months later
According to Harian Metro, Azmirullah Azan first met his now-wife, Wan Nazihah Wan Awang, on Facebook in May 2019.
What started as a simple online interaction quickly turned into something more serious. Just three months after getting to know each other, the couple decided to tie the knot in August that same year.
Azmirullah, who lives in Gong Badak, Terengganu, said their connection and shared goals played a big role in their decision to get married so quickly.
“We met on Facebook and didn’t date for very long. After three months of getting to know each other, we decided to get married,” he said.
At the time, Wan Nazihah was a single mother of five and was facing challenges with her business. Azmirullah initially offered to help her manage and revive it.
My original intention was just to help her with her business so that she could get back on her feet. But it turned into marriage, and I believe it was fate,” he added.
Stepchildren accepted him from the start
Azmirullah, who is originally from Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, said both families were supportive of their relationship despite the significant age gap.
Interestingly, his wife’s eldest child is around the same age as him.
Still, he said the stepchildren accepted him from the beginning and have continued to do so throughout the marriage.
Seven years into their relationship, Azmirullah said he has never felt awkward about the age difference between him and his wife.
“Some people think she’s my mum”
The young husband also shared that he often brings his wife along whenever he attends events or gatherings because they enjoy spending time together.
He admitted that some people occasionally assume Wan Nazihah is his mother due to their age gap.
Sometimes people think I’m bringing my mum along, but that’s normal. I’m not embarrassed to say she’s my wife because that’s the truth,” he said.
Despite the occasional remarks, Azmirullah said the comments do not bother him.
Some people have even accused him of marrying Wan Nazihah for financial reasons, but he firmly denied the claim.
According to him, he still works and actively helps his wife run her gas selling business instead of simply relying on her.
Wife says she prayed for the right partner
Wan Nazihah, 51, shared that she had been a single mother for five years after her first husband passed away in 2014 due to diabetes.
After living on her own for some time, she became open to the idea of remarrying. However, she prayed that she would meet a good man who could become her life partner.
She said Azmirullah was the one who first reached out to her on Facebook.
He started by liking my photos and eventually we began talking. Not long after that, he asked me to marry him,” she said.
Before accepting his proposal, Wan Nazihah performed the istikharah prayer to seek guidance.
“Alhamdulillah, everything went smoothly because both our families supported the relationship,” she said.
“He may be younger, but he’s responsible”
Wan Nazihah also described her husband as a mature and responsible partner despite being much younger than her.
Although negative comments occasionally appear on social media about their relationship, she said she does not take them to heart.
“For me, there’s no issue. Many women out there also have younger partners,” she said.
Now seven years into their marriage, the couple hopes their relationship will continue to be filled with happiness for many years to come.
