A postgraduate student lost his life in a tragic accident after the car he was driving plunged right into a lake at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan’s (UMK) campus in Jeli yesterday (Dec 2).
NST reported that the victim, identified as 25-year-old Muhammad Amidee bin Abdullah, died at the scene while his friend managed to get out of the submerged Perodua Axia in the nick of time.
Reportedly lost control of car
In a statement by Jeli district police chief Superintendent Kamarulzaman Harun, he said preliminary investigations found that the 6.20pm incident occurred when Muhammad was navigating a bend on a downhill stretch of road within the campus.

“The vehicle suddenly went out of control and skidded into the lake. The victim’s friend, who was in the front passenger seat, managed to get out and save himself, while the victim died at the scene,” he said.
Muhammad’s body was sent to Hospital Jeli for a post-mortem while his friend received emergency treatment.
The case is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
UMK’s statement
UMK later confirmed the incident in an official statement, saying that Muhammad was a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Bioengineering and Technology.

It added that UMK will lend its full cooperation to the police as they work to uncover the cause for the accident.
“UMK is also providing assistance and full support to the family of the late Muhammad Amide to help them through this difficult time.
“We call upon the public to avoid spreading unverified information and making speculations out of respect for the victim’s family and to not jeopadise investigations.
“Further developments will be announced through UMK’s official channels as well.”
