A 23-year-old local student passed away following a suspected fall from a high place at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) on Wednesday (Dec 17).
However, his body wasn’t discovered until more than 12 hours later by two maintenance workers.
Injuries consistent with fall
The body of the victim, identified as Aiman Hakim bin Norazam, was found lifeless at UMS’ Chancellor Hall yesterday (Dec 18) by the maintenance workers at around 10am, reported NST.
Kota Kinabalu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda said a medical officer from Hospital Wanita dan Kanak-Kanak Likas (HWKKS) was deployed to the scene and confirmed the victim’s death at 11.10am.
No injuries suggesting foul play was found on the victim following an external examination, except for injuries which were consistent with a fall.
A forensic team from the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters was also dispatched to the scene to conduct further examination.
“According to CCTV footage, it showed the victim falling at 6.09pm on Wednesday. However, no public witnesses were recorded and the case has been classified as sudden death (SDR),” said Kasim.
Uni confirms incident
Meanwhile, UMS released a statement about the incident, where it confirmed that one of its students was involved.
The university added that it will give its full cooperation in order to allow authorities to uncover the cause behind the victim’s demise and called upon the public to avoid speculation out of respect for the victim’s family.
“The safety, welfare, and wellbeing of students are always UMS’ priority. The university is committed to ensuring a safe and conducive campus environment through strict compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and continuous monitoring.”
