KUALA LUMPUR – 20th PTUM organizing committees’ unwavering spirit has not been dampened in any way by the pandemic, and this reflects in the production of the Pesta Tanglung Universiti Malaya Ke-20 (第二十届马大灯笼节), referred to as 20th PTUM, that runs from the 4th of November 2020 until the 17th of January 2021.
20th PTUM has returned stronger this year with a series of exciting online Chinese cultural events. The concept for this year’s PTUM is “Recollection”, symbolizing a reminiscence of all the unforgettable memories and efforts of PTUM in the past 19 years while upholding their original purpose in nurturing the heritage of Chinese culture.
In 2020, the pandemic has upended life as we know it, 20th PTUM is unable to organize physical events for the public as in the past years. Despite all the challenges, 20th PTUM has decided to make a strong comeback this year by presenting a series of online activities encompassing Opening Ceremony, Online Cultural Exhibition, Donation Package, Online Carnival Workshop, Online Sharing Session, Giveaway, Stage Play, and Closing Ceremony.
The “Lantern Dream”
Over the past 19 years, PTUM has mostly been based on physical activities, renowned for its four major events, Opening Ceremony, Exhibition, Carnival, and Cultural Night, hoping to pass on the values of Chinese culture from generation to generation.
Currently, there are several ongoing and upcoming online activities held by 20th PTUM, including:
1) Online Cultural Exhibition (线上文化展览)
The theme for the online cultural exhibition this year is ‘Reminiscence: Lost Chinese Culture’. It carries the meaning of reminiscing the forgotten Chinese culture. There will be a total of 5 episodes throughout the exhibition. The first episode (The Demise History of Huaxia 华夏消亡史) has been released on the 6th of November and stay tuned for the upcoming episodes!
2) Online Carnival Workshop (线上工作坊)
Thanks to the invention of online platforms, 20th PTUM can hold Online Carnival Workshop starting from November 13 till December 25, hoping to present the knowledge of the Chinese culture to the public in a fun way! The committees have invited professional guests in the field of cultural arts to share their experience and expertise during the workshop.
3) Donation Package(慈善配套销售活动)
Many welfare organizations have been affected by this pandemic. Thus, 20th PTUM decided to contribute to society by collaborating with Beautiful Gate Foundation For The Disabled in selling donation packages themed as “BUILD UP HOPE”, to rekindle the hope of the disability community by receiving generous and passionate donations from the public.
