In a significant crackdown on international drug trafficking, Maldivian authorities have arrested two Malaysian men for allegedly smuggling cannabis worth RM3.7 million into the country.

This case underscores the ongoing global efforts to combat the illegal drug trade and highlights the serious consequences faced by those involved.

According to Oriental Daily, a statement regarding the incident was released by the Maldivian police on Monday.

Customs officials discovered 15 kilograms of cannabis in the luggage of a 44-year-old Malaysian man who arrived on Emirates flight EK656 from Dubai to Velana International Airport last Saturday (27 Jul) morning.

Maldivian Police Chief Mohamed Afzal stated that tests confirmed the substance found in the suspect’s suitcase to be cannabis, with an estimated market value of MVR 12.3 million (approximately RM3.7 million).

He added that following the seizure of the drugs, authorities arrested a second Malaysian suspect, aged 41, on the evening of July 28. Both suspects are being held for five days to assist with the investigation.

Our investigation is ongoing, and we are working closely with international law enforcement agencies to gather more information,” said Afzal.

He also mentioned that this is the largest cannabis trafficking case in the Maldives this year, and the investigation suggests that the suspects may be connected to an international drug trafficking network spanning four different countries.
