The Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) has projected a significant increase in traffic flow on the country’s major highways during the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations.
According to LLM statement posted on Facebook, approximately 2.6 million vehicles are expected to traverse daily towards the east coast, northern, and southern regions of Peninsular Malaysia.
North-South Expressway estimated to be the most congested
In the statement, MHA Director-General Datuk Shazali said that the North-South Expressway (NSE) is predicted to handle 2.2 million vehicles daily, while other highways such as the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway will see 198,000 vehicles.
Meanwhile, the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1) will handle 82,000 vehicles, the East Coast Expressway Phase 2 (LPT2) will manage 48,000 vehicles, and the West Coast Expressway (WCE) is estimated to cater to 120,000 vehicles.

With the long holiday ahead, traffic leaving the capital is expected to increase between January 24 and January 28, while the return traffic to Kuala Lumpur is projected to surge on February 1 and February 2,” Shazali noted.
Measures to ease congestion
To alleviate congestion during this busy period, the MHA has directed highway concessionaires to adopt several measures.
From January 24 to February 3, no lanes may be closed unless in emergencies.
The Smart Lane system will also be activated at 25 identified congestion hotspots along the NSE, and traffic management at toll plazas and junctions will be improved.
Additionally, contraflow lanes will be implemented where necessary, and toll booth operations will be enhanced with the use of portable handheld devices to speed up transactions.
Rest stops and portable toilets
To enhance comfort for highway users, the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) completed repairs and upgrades at 38 rest stops, service areas, lay-bys, and toll plazas in 2024.
These efforts will extend into 2025, with temporary facilities provided to accommodate users while closed amenities are being upgraded,” the authority stated.

In response to increased traveler demand, the NSE concessionaire will also introduce around 50 cabin-style portable toilets, offering a more comfortable alternative to traditional portable units.
The MHA has urged motorists to plan their journeys carefully and remain patient during peak travel times to ensure a smoother and safer experience on the roads.
