Applying for a job can be nerve wracking, especially for those stepping into the workforce for the first time.
However, one woman was left puzzled after a young jobseeker allegedly struggled to complete an application form and became confused by the section asking for his gender.
Arrived looking neat and stylish
Reported by mStar, the woman said the applicant was a 19yo man who had approached her looking for work.
She described him as good looking, neatly dressed and stylish, adding that he appeared like a typical Gen Z.
Despite making a good first impression with his appearance, the young man reportedly faced difficulties after being handed a form to complete.
According to the woman, he immediately stepped outside and called someone to ask how he should fill it in.
At first, she did not think much of it.
I thought it was normal because many people don’t know how to fill in forms,” she wrote.
Confused by the ‘gender’ column
After returning, the applicant continued completing the form while asking the woman for help with several sections he did not understand.
However, one particular question caught her by surprise.
Then, he asked me, ‘How should I answer this question about gender?’”
The woman said she was left stunned as she considered it a basic question that a person applying for a job should be able to answer.
Nevertheless, she clarified that she was not trying to label the applicant as unintelligent.
Instead, she urged other young jobseekers to prepare themselves before attending a job interview or submitting an application.
I’m not saying he isn’t smart, but if you’re applying for a job, please come prepared. This is something basic.”
Employer eventually helped him complete it
Despite her surprise, the woman did not turn the applicant away or leave him to figure it out alone.
She eventually guided him through the form and even helped fill it in for him.
I still helped him and even completed the form for him. I was just surprised that he didn’t understand the gender section,” she said.
While filling in a form may appear straightforward to some, the encounter served as a reminder for first time jobseekers to familiarise themselves with basic application details before approaching a potential employer.
