An 18-year-old teen motorcyclist suffered a gruesome death after his head was cut open following a chain collision along the Butterworth–Kulim Expressway (BKE) yesterday morning.
Photos and videos of the crash, which were shared widely on social media, showed the teen’s brain being scattered on the road.
Many also speculated that the crash involved a group of mat rempits (illegal racers) but this has yet to be confirmed by the authorities.
What happened
According to Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris, he said police received a report at 3.30am about the accident which occurred at Kilometre 8.2 of the Butterworth–Kulim Expressway (BKE), heading towards Kulim.
He added a total of eight motorcycles were travelling from Seberang Jaya at the time, reported Sin Chew Daily and NST.
“Upon reaching the location, it is believed that one of the motorcycles brushed against another, causing the rider to lose control and skid. This led to a chain collision involving the other motorcycles.
“The 18-year-old victim was thrown onto the left side of the road and struck the metal barrier separating the car and motorcycle lanes.
“He died from serious head and bodily injuries and the body was sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital forensic unit for a post-mortem.”
Meanwhile, seven other motorcyclists, aged between 18 and 22, sustained injuries to their limbs and were treated at the same hospital.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
They called upon youths to stay away from dangerous driving and to adhere to traffic laws. Parents were also reminded to monitor their children’s activities to prevent involvement in “unhealthy” road stunts.
