A Form 4 student tragically lost his life while participating in an inter-school rugby match that was scheduled to end today.
Following the tragedy, the championship was immediately called off and has been rescheduled to a later date,

According to a report by The Vibes, the victim, Muhammad Fauzan Mohd Sulaiman, collapsed near his team’s tent at around 10.30am, just before entering the field for the second half of a match between SMS Johor and SMS Rembau at the Sekolah Berasrama Penuh (SBP) National Rugby 7s Championship 2025 on Friday (Oct 3).
A medical assistant who was at the scene believed the teen was suffering from a seizure as he reportedly went stiff and was shaking uncontrollably.
Emergency CPR was then performed on the teen as his pulse gradually weakened and he was sent to Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB). However, he was pronounced dead at 11.18am.
Internal bleeding caused by torn hip muscle cause of death
Ipoh District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said a post-morten revealed that a torn pelvic muscle which led to internal bleeding was what led to the teen’s demise.
Post-mortem findings revealed that the cause of death was ‘exsanguination from a psoas muscle tear’ — internal bleeding in the right hip muscle.
“No signs of illness were reported prior to the game. The case is classified as sudden death,” he added.
Rugby match rescheduled
Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry will take full responsibility for the tragedy.
She added that the ministry is deeply saddened and affected by the tragedy, and is currently providing full support to the family, the school, and the team involved.
“Every time a tournament is organized, all aspects of safety and emergency preparedness are taken into account. However, incidents like this are highly unexpected and unforeseeable,” she said as quoted by Sinar Harian.
In light of the incident, the rugby tournament was eventually cancelled and will instead resume from Jan 28 to 31 next year as a gesture of support and respect to the victim’s family.
