# Johor Woman Caught For ‘Khalwat’ Claims She Was With Cousin, But Later Backtracks

**A woman and her male companion were recently caught by the Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAINJ) officers for alleged 'khalwat' (close proximity).**

Though the woman tried to weasel her way out by claiming she and her companion were relatives, her composure quickly crumbled during questioning, leading her to admit the truth.

## Morning spot-check

According to [Harian Metro](https://www.hmetro.com.my/mutakhir/2026/10/1429356/mula-mula-dakwa-abang-saudara-pasangan-kekasih-akhirnya-dicekup-berkhalwat), the 18-year-old woman and her 19-year-old partner were awoken by the sound of JAINJ officers knocking on their hotel room door at 1.50am today.

Three minutes later, the man opened the door and officers found the woman sitting on the bed while clad in long pants and a T-shirt.

## Feeble explanation

Initially, the woman told officers that she and the man were cousins. But when pressed to produce more evidence on their family ties, she changed her story and admitted to being his lover.

Further investigations found that the couple had known each other for four months after meeting through an online application.

##### When asked what were they doing inside the hotel room, the couple said they wanted to spend the night after heavy rain prevented them from travelling by motorcycle.

They also claimed that their respective homes were in Pontian, adding that they were about to leave and return home before JAINJ officers turned up at their hotel room.

Although the couple had plans to get married, they said they were still young and didn't have the finances to have a wedding.

They were subsequently detained and the case is being investigated under Section 27 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment.
