Ever wished you could know what your pet is really thinking?
For one Malaysian woman, that curiosity has turned into a side career where she “communicates” with animals and relays their thoughts directly to owners.
Turning childhood curiosity into a skill
Having grown up with hamsters, rabbits, and dogs, Amanda Pan always wondered if there was a way to understand what animals were truly feeling.
That curiosity eventually led her to take a course in animal communication about three years ago. While the course itself was not long, she said mastering the skill was a tedious process.
“The hardest part was learning how to differentiate my own thoughts from what the pet was saying,” Amanda explained.

When Amanda first told her friends and family about her new skill, the reactions were mixed.
“The reaction I got from pet owners was one of curiosity and eagerness, while the biggest skeptics were those who didn’t own a pet.
“That being said, people who have pets are usually more open to it as they want to see if it’s real or not.
How does pet communication work?
According to Amanda, the pet communication process begins on WhatsApp, where clients will send a photo of their pet showing its face and eyes, its name, age, and gender.

Before any session is booked, Amanda says she first checks if the pet is willing to communicate.
“Some pets are very shy and aren’t keen to talk to strangers. If their pet is open to it, I will proceed with a one-hour session which costs RM168.

“I usually make all arrangments on WhatsApp as sometimes pets share things owners may forget later and they can always search back what was said,” she explained.

Just like humans, Amanda says pets have different personalities, ranging from talkative to being silent.
“Some will say things like, ‘I’m so happy, this is my house, my mum brings me for walks every day. Others may respond with short, simple answers.

“In rare cases, pets may be reluctant to engage at all. When that happens, I would advise owners to reassure their pets beforehand by telling them I’m a friend who wants to help pass messages to their owners.
Feeling what pets feel
One of Amanda’s most memorable sessions involved a 17-year-old dog that was terminally ill, and the owner wanted to know if it had any final requests.
“After talking to the dog, I found that it was asking for McDonald’s fries, a treat it used to enjoy occasionally before it developed health issues and kidney failure due to old age.
“At that point, there wasn’t much that could be done medically. The dog just wanted the fries. It was a heartbreaking yet touching moment,” she recalled.
While many may find the concept of pet communication intriguing, Amanda admits the job can take an emotional toll.
“While I don’t hear the barks or meows directly, the messages I received is mostly through intuition and emotions.

“Sometimes, I can even feel physical discomfort too. Because of that, I would meditate before each session to clear my mind that would help me avoid making assumptions.”
A full-time career in the making?
With so many cats, dogs, rabbits and even parrots in Malaysia, Amanda believes pet communication has potential in becoming a full-time career.

However, she stressed that sessions must be done ethically.
“Pet communicators do not randomly approach animals without owner consent. It’s an invasion of privacy.

“I also avoid engaging animals in places like zoos without permission as it may lead to emotionally heavy conversations that no one can resolve,” she added.
For those considering trying pet communication, Amanda has one piece of advice:
“Go in with an open heart”. You can be skeptical, but don’t question every single thing. There’s no point paying for a session just to argue.
“It’s like couples’ therapy. If you know your partner will judge everything you say, you won’t feel like sharing anything.”
Whether one believes in the power of pet communication or not, one thing is certain, for many pet owners, the desire to understand their furry companions runs deep.
