Aaron Chia-Wooi Yik, Lee Zi Jia Get Nominated for BWF Award 2022

National men’s doubles world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and world No.2 Lee Zii Jia have been nominated for the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Player of the Year awards 2022, reported Bernama.

According to a statement by BWF, Olympic and world champion Viktor Axelsen and 2021 world champion Loh Kean Yew from Singapore were nominated alongside Zii Jia for Male Player of the Year.

As for Aaron-Wooi Yik, they will compete against Chen Qing Chen-Jia Yi Fan (China), Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai (Thailand), and reigning champions Zheng Si Wei-Huang Ya Qiong (China) for the Pair of the Year award.

The duo not only made history by becoming Malaysia’s first world champions, but also attained a career-high by ranking world No. 4 in August.

Paralympians not forgotten

Meanwhile, current world and Paralympic champion Cheah Liek Hou has been named as one of the six individuals nominated for the Male Para Badminton Player of the Year Award.

The other nominees include Daiki Kajiwara (Japan), Pramod Bhagat (India), and Lucas Mazur (France), Chu Man Kai (HK) and Choi Jung Man (S. Korea).

As for the national men’s WH1-WH2 (wheelchair) doubles Muhammad Ikhwan Ramli-Noor Azwan Noorlan, they will be up against five other pairs for the Para Badminton Pair of the Year award.

The awards will be handed out on Dec 5 in conjunction with the BWF World Tour Finals 2022 gala dinner in Bangkok.

BWF stated that all nominees were selected based on their performance throughout the 2021/2022 season from Nov 1, 2021 to Oct 21, 2022.

The awards was also to acknowledge the achievements of elite and para players across eight categories.
